What does the UK news industry look like?

  • The news UK industry is oligopolistic, 
  •  80% of newsbrands are controlled by 3 main companies including two press barons. 
  • This affects how they are produced, their views, and the way they are regulated.

  • The Daily Mail is part of DMGT, run by Lord Rothermere. 
  • The editor and owner have a close relationship which can influence the production and content of stories they publish. 
  • The paper needs to sell copies in order to make a profit.

  Intertextuality- The shaping of a text's meaning, by another text. Set in the 1980's, Stranger Thing's makes plently of intertextual references to a range of texts from this era, such as Stephen King novels and the fantasy game Dungeons and Dragons- the game being played in the opening scene. The drama makes reference to past films, Steven Spielburg's E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982) for example, with the camera panning down from the sky emulating the opening of E.T. What connects these cultural texts are the genres of horror and science fiction. This connection or reference to genre in episode 1 of Stranger Things provides familiarity and a starting point for audience interest and engagement. It brings together the three C's- computing, communication and content- and is a direct consequence of the digitalisation of media content. The Radio 1 Breakfast show is developing towards media convergence.  ‘Media  Convergence’ describes three phenomena:   1.How technology comes together as a single source due to  digitalisation  of content and platforms.
