Paragraph 1- Question 3 LFTVD

Paragraph 1- Audience

The genres in two shows, Stranger Things and The Killing, have been formed to appeal to their target audiences. For example, Stranger Things was released by Netflix in Mid 2016 where they exploited different genres such as High school romance, coming of age, buddy and thriller, which all connect to Stranger Things, which makes it have a multi-narrative structure. This can be linked to Steve Neale's genre theory where genres are not fixed, but are constantly evolving, so the multiple genres are able to attract different audiences to watch Stranger Things.
In contrast, The Killing's 2007 target audience appeal to the representation of the cold and gritty Denmark, which highlight the corrupt politics and visualized gender representations. Its Nordic Noir genre reflects these connotations, and so it ended up influencing other Nordic Noir shows like the Bridge. The success of the show outside of the Danish Audience, reflects the cultural understandings of Denmark and they appeal to its more dark tone it portrays.
