Multiple meanings:
Does the background of a cathederal showing:
  • Religion is a saviour- she presents religion in this shot to be beautiful with the long shot, clear blue skies. This could be telling us that religion may have helped Sande get out of a rough time in her life.
  • Religion is marginalised in society?
  • That music is the new religion?
  • Emeli sande is a critic/messanger of society
This close up of a young girl in her car may be optimistic and positive because the way the lighting shines on her face is like heaven or god is reaching out to her in order to help her. She looks likes she is engaging for help and is curious as to what this light is.

The jewellery she is wearing contrasts against her dark clothing, and shines out in the light. This could be because she is wearing it with purpose and the contrast makes us think that she was in a bad time in her life but found her way out. The light behind her shows that there is Always a light at the end of the tunnel.

The figure in the background carrying a cross couldve been carefully constructed to be Jesus. This is because Jesus died on the cross, linking for it to be him. But as we see him walk into the light on a normal street with the cross and a perhaps troubled/homeless man following him, makes us think that he is following him to a better/safer place and looking for help.

The repetiton of angles and virgin mary could be symbols reminding us that there is still hope out there, and the lighting in this shot is warm but bright. This could be inviting us in to religion/god/angels and getting rid of our sins. The angels posture and her hand on heart could be showing us that religion and god has forgiven us for our bad intentions.

"Oh heaven, oh heaven" this lyric may be deliberate, and as she is sitting in a bus stop, it could show that maybe heaven is all around us in different forms i.e. family and friends. The lyrics could be calling out for heaven so that she can show there is help out there.

How does editing make meaning?
  • There is a lot of cross cutting between Sande and the man. This could be suggesting that not all the attention and focus is on her, unconventional as this is her first single and she is building a brand image. The editing choice of not matching up lyrics to the right shots/scenes could be someones mind, or even Sande's, that is confused amd mixed up and wants to find the light. This helps explain Sande's message that there are bad intentions around us and it can mess with us, give us a dirty heart (the second "oh heaven" was a guy smoking/doing drugs) but reaching our for help and heaven will make us good.
