Big Issue revision- practical task

 What is the purpose and ethos of the Big Issue?

  • The Big Issue as a brand is considered to be a business that functions to produce money, which is socially invested to create employment and ease poverty for people rather than providing profit for those who own it.
  • They give jobs to homeless people or those in need by giving them the role of street vendors to sell magazines so they can get back on track
  • The Big issue ethos is to represent those who are underrepresented
  • They are left-leaning, socialist and don't actually have a specific leaning
Big Issue conventions and house style:
  • Very colourful colour palettes- easier to sell
  • Cartoonist and lots of editing/photoshop used
  • Features celebrities who have made a positive impact on the world/share socialist views- Greta Thurnburg, David tennant, Marcus Rashford
  • Attentive on issues such as climate change, racism, poverty
  • Big bold typaface
  • House style is diverse- they are experimental
  • Intertextuality
Top 3 covers:
I have chosen this cover as in a way it creates an awareness for climate change and makes the reader think about the issues of using plastic etc. The yellow bold typeface is very outstanding and the readers can identity with the brand values it conveys. The climate change reflects the big issues values and beliefs and by using photoshop it emphaisises the damage that rubbish can do to the world. "join the restoration nation" is very influencial for readers and makes them want make a change.

This cover is very positive and uplifting my featuring Captain Tom, man who shaped the world by raising money by walking laps. This is also influenced by the "ive always been looking for the future" which relives a positve spirit in time of a hard situation. Captain tom is in a different font to show that he is a special, influential person and the interview feature draws people in
This cover reinforces the big issues ethos and values by sharing tips and information about money and jobs during a pandemic. This is very useful for people in need as lots of people lost their jobs over lockdown- this shows that they are different and uncoventional

Big issue front cover

  I have chosen to do a NHS feature for my big issue cover because as the elections are coming up, a main proposal for left wing parties, especially labour are highlighting a NHS pay rise etc. This conveys with the Big Issue as although they don't follow a particular political stance, it is clear that they portray left-wing views and don't feature big businesses or banks, so to achieve this, having an NHS feature is very significant for the values and ethos of the big issue. I followed the Big issue house style and conventions by illustrating a powerful colour palette, through the rainbow and contrasts of yellow and blue make the cover stand out. For the background i used yellow to represent positivity an happiness, illustrating the 'sun' so that it can shine among the NHS staff.
