Music video lesson 12/03/21

What kind of questions could I face?

  1. 1. Explain how media representations in music videos are chosen to promote the artist... refer to one of the music videos you have studied to support your answer

  • -Emeli Sande- soulful, original and authentic

  • -Music industry- music videos are used to help promote an artist and build their star image, for example in heaven...
  • -Chosen through media language elements- motifs of religion are shown throughput the video which is unconventional in a lot of popular music videos
  • -Representations of different social groups throughout the video such as homeless (marginised people in society) help portray Sande to be soulful and original, which again is unconventional. She is concerned with social reality.

  2.  How have these videos used developing technologies to represent events, individuals or          social groups? Refer to one or both videos

-The music video industry used a range of different technologies such as camera work to construct how others are portrayed for example...

-Heaven- shaky handheld camera may construct the social groups in society to be normal and they aren’t just there for acting in the video, they are there to create a message. It is not a conventional music video they are showing real life effects. Also makes it homemade and retro.

-Burn the witch- use of stop motion camera work

  3. Explain how the combination of media langauge elements convey values, attitudes and             beliefs. Refer to one video...

  • -Burn the Witch- the motifs of disturbing elements in BTW such as witch trials and drawing X’s on doors represents Radiohead's attitude towards right wing authoritive figures and that they believe that these figures discriminate others such as the outsiders in society.

   4. Explain how events, issues, individuals and social groups are represented through                   processes of selection and combination. Refer to one or both...

  • -Selection of scenes where women are portrayed as the victim in BTW such as witch trials and where there are men with masks on in a circle surrounding the blonde girl which could represent a patriarchal society and men viewing women as objects.
