The big issue revision- lesson 6
How has covid affected the big issue?
- Articles now focusing a lot more on mental health and how to improve it
- Set up Big Issue RORA jobs and training to help create opportunities and provide job security
- More mention on the NHS and respecting them
- Using the Big Issue Shop as a way to bring in revenue
- "find love in lockdown" issue- they have changed the type of stories to fit in with lockdown
- Big Issue now sold in shops due to vendors being unable to sell on streets etc- McColl's and sainsburys outlets
- They have been campaigning to make the big issue digital for now
- "Customers will be able to purchase copies in 164 Sainsbury’s stores initially, extending to 315 over the coming weeks, and 1,430 McColl’s stores, for the price of £3. The Big Issue is also going to be launching an app"
The Guardian would publish a story about the big issue because it represents their liberal ideology and their values. The Guardian are more of a left wing paper who support equality and social work to help the vulnerable
Intertextuality:
- Reference to other media texts
- Big issue use this to attract readers and bring humour/emotion to the front cover
- This makes the big issue uncnventional to mainstream magazines, who have a more serious front
- Niche audience will recognise it
- Intertextuality of ABBA- a popular pop/rock/disco band during the 70's to the 80's (audience will recognise them)
- "decision time the winner takes it all" this is about who is going to win their decision of whether to remain or leave the EU
- used the world (europe side) as a disco ball to play in with the intertextuality
- Used song lyrics to maybe represent what the political leaders want to happen
- Nicola Sturgeon "breaking up is never easy" might represent that she doesn't want to leave the EU- playful way of putting this
Analyse why the big issue magazine has used an intertextual approach to the political landscape of the moment on the front cover
- I think this front cover is about 'pinning' a national identity and standing up for who you are- punks usually are working class or youths who want equality, civil rights, health rights etc
- Front cover is quite witty
- Pink and yellow- sex pistols colour sheme- helps build brand identity and familiarize with audience
- Big issue supports punk ideologies and gaining social and economic equality for all working class/ those who struggle
- Might have included map of UK to show that the UK needs to change and realise that there is a lot of injustice out there that needs to be resolved
How to structure a response:
- Make it clear we know what intertextuality is
- Explain why the big issue uses this often and link to niche audience
- Identify intertextual references and explain what is being suggested through these references (colour, font, image)
- How does the representations constructed support/minor the big issues ethos and ideology
- Explain why it is advantagerous that the big issue use intertextuality
