Feminism theories:

  • Feminist Thoery- van zoonen
Women are often objectified in media representations and she emphasises the importance of gender being seen as socially and and culturally constructed , as a result gender can vary depending on cultural and historical contexts. We live in a patriarchal world where men dominate women.
  • Feminist theory- Bel Hooks
Feminist critiques of the media focus on challenging patriarchal and sexist representations. Intersectionality 
considers the way in which multiple identities and systems of oppression overlap e.g. in relation to the multiple identities that create an individual identity (gender, race etc). Intersectional approaches to feminism draws attention to the importance of considering how the interactions of identities results in oppression. Hooks argues that media representations often reflect these oppressive ideologies.

The Killing:
Representations in media are often simplistic and reinforce dominant ideas that audiences can make sense of them.

Based on Episode 1, how far do you agree with this statement in relation to how men and women are represented in The Killing? 

I think they are represented differently in the way that the narrative follows a female police detective while the others such as the politicians are mainly male characters.

  • Sarah Lund is represented as a mother and police detective in the opening moments of the Killing
  • Nanna Birk Larsen is represented as a victim in a murder
  • Jan Meyers is represented as a new police detective in Denmark
  • Troels Hartmann is represented as a popular politician who is campaigning to be mayor.

Dominant ideologies:
  • Women can do the same job as men
  • Theis and Pernille have a good relationship

Dominant ideologies challenged;
  • All politicians are male
  • Its actually Theis who goes out and looks for Nanna, not Pernille
Possible ideologies:
  • Opening scene- victim- very little clothing
  • Sarah lund in Mans pj top but still revealing a lot of her body
  • Sarah lund walks through rain and doesnt care about her appearence
  • Male-dominant work force
  • Sarah lund appears to have put up with a lot of sexual innuendo and banter due to the male dominant work place
  • she demonstartes both male and female characteristics
  • Gender is continuum

Big issue front cover

  I have chosen to do a NHS feature for my big issue cover because as the elections are coming up, a main proposal for left wing parties, especially labour are highlighting a NHS pay rise etc. This conveys with the Big Issue as although they don't follow a particular political stance, it is clear that they portray left-wing views and don't feature big businesses or banks, so to achieve this, having an NHS feature is very significant for the values and ethos of the big issue. I followed the Big issue house style and conventions by illustrating a powerful colour palette, through the rainbow and contrasts of yellow and blue make the cover stand out. For the background i used yellow to represent positivity an happiness, illustrating the 'sun' so that it can shine among the NHS staff. On this background i have engraved 'NHS' among it to make it seem unique and also give more appreciation to NHS and convey the values of Big Issue. I have chosen this specific cut-out o
