Mise en scene

  • The video is set in an urban setting, with an emphasis on street life. This shows a focus on people, specifically in deprived areas. This reflects the life of ordinary people during their day to day lives, in locations such as busy streets, parks, shops, homes and housing estates. The notion of it being a more deprived area is particularly honed in on. The artist herself is at times depicted looking out of a window, sitting in a field of flowers and in the streets themselves. This signifies that she is the same as everyone else.

  • The artist’s costume is particularly symbolic, as throughout the video she is represented as somewhat angelic , however she is dressed in all black. This juxtaposes her angelic representation, and perhaps could suggest she is a ‘fallen angel’. Also, the shoulder pads within her top could represent stubs where an angels wings could have been ripped off, whihc may represent her past where she had negative influences around her. She also has dark eye-makeup, juxtaposing with a light pink lipstick. Her hair colour is white, adding to the ‘Halo’ effect. She could also be considered a guardian angel, as throughout the video she is seen watching of ‘looking over’ other people in society. Within the context of the song, it reflects the idea that we all have angelic qualities, however life in a deprived area of society means that we cannot fulfill this ‘angel’ image we all want to achieve.
Camera Work

  • When the focus is on the artist, the main camera shots used are close ups and mid shots. This shows that her video is personal and she wants to have meaning, but also to have the focus on her since its her first single. They also use a low angle to make her seem prominent. There is a high angle of a women in a red dress who is a prostitute. This could represent the sins and bad influences.
  • Extreme close up on 'will you recognize me?' to give importance.
