Burn the Witch analysis

Media language features:
Mise en scene:

  • Village in England- everyone knows everybody
  • Bakery, post office, pub - English connotations
  • Locals dressed differently to the inspector (outsider)
  • Cartoon characters rather than real/live characters
Camera Work:
  • close-ups of the flowers and the man doing woodwork which turns out to be sinister
  • Establishing shots to show events
  • still camera movements- feeling of being trapped
  • zoom in and out- creepy elements
  • Long shots and mid shots
  • vintage feel
Editing:
  • Straight cuts at the start, but as the video became more sinister and creepy, it starts to fade out to black.
  • Continuity editing
  • Usually fades to a different scene but doesn't happen in Burn the Witch.
Intertextuality references:
  • X's on door- plague
  • Seesaw with chairs- used for dumping witches
  • Trumpton
  • Wickerman
  • Blonde girl- could represent Germany
  • Jobes- bilblical story of JOB, nice guy punished by god in multiple ways
Marketing tool vs piece of art
  • Unlike heaven, radiohead don't need to show themselves in the video as they have already established a brand image.
  • It was directed by Chris Hopwell who has been very successful and the video gained 36 million views when uploaded to youtube.
  • Radiohead took a break off social media and deleted their accounts, leaving fans to speculate. After this, they started releasing clips on instagram, promising something to the fans.
  • Finally, they released their single on youtube and their website.
Representations of groups (women/outsiders/middle england):
  1. Women- There is a scene of a girl who is probably going to get killed by a group of masked men, tied to a tree. This shows women to be victims, maybe because of being witches in medieval times or she could be an outsider.
  2. Outsiders- they treat outsiders very differently to the people of the local community. For example, they throw death connotations at them and at the end punish them. This could be for the clinical view of immigration and British citizens being racist etc towards migrants, especially conservatives and UKIP.
  3. Middle England- There is a mayor and people etc in the village who represent being middle class in England. Typically, these people don't like change and are very to themselves. We see this in Burn the Witch as people who don't like outsiders and want to carry on with their own lives however when the inspector comes they end up nearly killing him as he isnt like one of them.
What brand image does this help create for Radiohead?
Radiohead don't need to focus on their brand image in particular as over the years they have established this when they release music.
However, Burn the Witch helps to create a specific brand image from the messages it conveys- in my opinion, the music video is all about migrants coming in and being abused by the people of the country:
Radioheads brand image is to create awareness of social issues happening around us every day and want to make a change. I think they are pressuring groups and people like UKIP and Trump to stop being anti-immigrant and respect people more carefully.
