Jungle Book Research

1967:
- American animated musical comedy
-Produced by Walt Disney productions
-Based on Rudyard Kipling's book- Jungle Book
-Release date: 18 November 1968 (UK), 18 October 1967 (USA)
-It was the last film to be produced by Walt Disney, who died during the production.
The early versions, following Kipling's work, were dark and sinister but Disney didn't want this in the family film- changed production team; the casting employed famous actors and musicians, as well as Disney regulars including Sterling Holloway- Bambi, Alice in Wonderland and Winnie the Pooh
-The film initially became Disneys second-highest-grossing animated film in the United States and Canada.
-Budget= $4 million
-Box office= $378 million
-Disney's personal control of the whole studio affected all stages of production and distribution
-The standard procedure was to draw characters first then cast the actors but JB reversed it; the drawings were now based on the actors, their voices and their voice personalities.
-Disney wanted the characters to carry the film and was creative in vocal casting; he had songs developing early- most songs written by Sherman Brothers (Mary Poppins)
- Backgrounds were hand painted- with the exception of the waterfall
-JB was created on transparent 'cels'- a technique patented by Earl Hurd in 1914. The cels were originally fixed onto register pegs and this way various layers of image could be shot at once and backgrounds didn't need repainting each time.
-Disney developed this by using a multi-plane camera and moving at different speeds which creates illusions of depth and almost a 3D image.

2016:
- American fantasy adventure film
-Directed and produced by Jon Favreau, Walt Disney Pictures and written by Justin Marks
-inspired by 1967 version and Kiplings book
-Live-action/CGI film which tells the story of Mowgli, an orphaned human boy who, guided by his animal guardians, sets out on a journey of self--discovery while evading the threatening Shere Khan (fictional tiger)
-Release date: April 15 2016 (US)
-Budget= $177 million
-Box Office= $966.6 million
-Favreau wanted the film to be a part homage to the classic Disney films of the 1930s and '40s: Snow White, Pinocchio, Dumbo and Bambi.
-He looked for tonal clues as to how to balance Danger, humour and emotion without scarring the younger audience.
-All the animals and landscapes were created on computers, mostly by the British digital effects house MPC.
-Animal characters created with a realistic look in order to target movie-goers
-Favreau went between the structure of the 1967 film and original book- they used people at Disney who worked on older films to help the production
-In terms of Disney being a conglomerate, the production process also relied on other companies like MPC and so wasn't fully made in-house.
- Disney used social media to promote teasers, photos and videos in the months before the theatrical release- also made a snap chat filter.
-JB16 was also produced in 3D- one of the first films with 3D version but not all cinemas showed the 3D version
-Walt Disney Records released a soundtrack album and Disney made merchandise.
-Been released digitally, DVD and Blu Ray
-Scenes were first filmed using motion capture
-in 2016, Disneys productions earned more at box office than any other of the 6 majors.
