Music video revision lesson 5

 Radiohead- Burn the Witch

Ideas and impressions:

  • The dangers of mob mentality
  • The pressure to conform to the norm
  • The evil, victim-blaming mob mentality lies beneath seemingly civilized society
  • A critique of the increasingly tribal/populist nature of western politics
  • A critique of western societies response to migrant crisis
  • Critic of knee-jerk islamophobia

Near to the middle of the video, we see a circle of men wearing possible dead deer masks as a way to intimidate and influence the blonde girl, tied to the tree. The action of pointing their swords up and turning in a circle doesn't necessarily mean they are trying to harm her in any way, but perhaps are trying to create evil in herself, as a way to conform to the evil, victim-blaming mob that becomes a norm in the villiage's society. Linking towards a patriarchal society, this could reflect that women don't have a voice, since the blonde girl doesn't have a mouth feature. In addition to this, the costume and hair of the girl could perhaps reflect right-wing views from a german society during the 30's and 40's, showing how women are expected to behave and dress, in order to conform to society.
