Music video reintroduction

 Music video

Media language and representation

Brand/star image: The portrayal of the person in the media and the persona that they adopt to the public

-The consumer’s perception of that individual/group
-It is a deliberately constructed to create a certain impression of an artist

Representation

  • -Someone who is socially concious

  • -Willing to speak out against injustice/discrimination

  • -Less concerned with glamourous brand image

  • -True to their roots

  • -A campaigner

Media language

  • -The fact it is in black and white throughout the whole video is important for audiences to recognise that we live in a world where injustice is perceived and this is unconventional in a lot of music videos

  • -Standard chronological narrative, with foreshadowing, with the box

  • -Cuts between scenes a lot to show urgency and aggression

Narrative Theory

-Todorov- stories have a certain structure. They start with a status quo, something happens to disrupt this (inciting incident), one thing leads to another (chain of cause and effect) at the end a new status quo emerges. If this structure isn't here its just a collection of events

Oasis- stand by me

-showed people appearing to be engaging in criminal and/or anti-social acts—only for it to be revealed that they are actually helping someone else

Hoizer- take me to church:

  1. Describe the star image or brand constructed for the artist
In the music video, Hoizer is constructed as a socially-concious and a campiagner artist who wants to end injustice in the gay community. He doesnt appear in the music video himself as he doesnt want to be in the limelight, his video is for educational and awareness only, which is genuinely unconventional

     2. How does this video engage and entertain its audience?

The music video all throughout is in black and white which is very significant to show that we live in a world where its not just black and white, there are binarys and different groups of people who shouldn't be hated because of their sexuality, race etc. This engages the audience to think about the society we live in and how we can create equality. As well as this, connotations such as the locked box intrigues the audience to think what is inside it and what secrets are exposed.

    3. Does it explore big ideas and comment on society?

It shows that society is damaged, by hating on someone because of their sexuality. I think the purpose of this video was to explore ideas of injustice in the LGBTQ community. The fact that it has a parental guidence sign at the start at the video emphasises how damaging this injustice is to peoples physical and mental health, so Hoizer deliberately puts the audience in a place to think about what our society is really like

    4. Who is its core audience and how does it target them?

I think this core audience is for younger audiences (teenagers and young adults) who could be scared of coming out, but also for people to recognise that these type of people are scared to come out because of what will happen to them. It uses emotive imagery to interest them and the indie pop music style might appeal to younger audiences more than older ones.

 5. What elements of this video would encourage an audience to share or like it?

I think the imagery of one of the men getting hurt by the gang will enable audiences to share it as they want to share awareness about it, and its emotive so the audience will be hard bit by this and recognise that this is what happens in today's society
