The Big Issue revision- Lesson 3

 The Big issue- representation

What is representation?

It is the medias portrayal of events, individuals, social groups in a particular way

Example- Phil Mitchell from East Enders:

  • Image seems to portray him as a man who is intimidating, serious, masculine
  • Represented as a stereotypical man on eastenders as geezer/criminal/hardman
  • He suits the audience needs- important to story line
  • Constructed for a reason
  • Producers want audience to see picture of him and know what kind of person he is (tough and serious)
  • Hands in pockets- stern, controlling and scary
Who does the big issue represent and why?

From looking at the front covers, the Big issue represents a variety social groups from children to ethnicitys, to emphasise support and their social needs. For example, the american racism history cover is not just targeted for the American audience, but to everyone in society all across the world as it is a huge social issue that needs to be changed. It can be argued that the Big Issue choose to represent these issues which big mainstream media choose not to- homeless and street vendors in a positive light.
The Big Issue try to bring issues to our attention that are not talked about and those who are marginalized- those who are not represented in the media and are pushed away. They try and make a reality of these social issues and individuals.
Their "pay benmen more than bankers" headline is significant to their ethos of not supporting big businesses such as banks, and putting more of a focus on people who help the community, such as low skilled workers. I don't think The daily mail wouldn't run a headline like this, because they support high British, right wing values who don't represent the most vulnerable in a positive light, and they are typically unfair/judgemental on their opinions/representations of people.

This front cover of the big issue has a fun/silly approach to money, and how people can save money/handle it correctly. In a way the big issue is trying to show that even if you have a little bit of money, you can still do a lot with it, as shown in the cover line "the positive impact of small investment", and they are taking their own approach to handling money well, than handing it over to the banks who they don't support because they don't help out the vulnerable very well.
We see Romesh Ranganathan who is a British stand-up comedian and presenter and The front cover is presenting him as happy with a huge smile to help with money trouble and how to prevent it and the front cover is presenting tips and hacks to prevent such this.
Background: Ramesh's family had financial trouble years ago and his home was taken away from them and they were homeless temporarily. This shows that more people who we don't expect go through hard financial times so the Big Issue is trying to normalise this to the audience.
This links to the Big Issues ethos of helping those who are less fortunate by producing tips and hacks to helping them for their target audience.
