 What is the purpose of the Big Issue?

  • Big Issues purpose is to dismantle poverty by creating opportunity, through self-help, social trading and business solutions
  • Its magazine launched as a result of a growing number of rough sleepers on the streets in London
  • It is an award winning publication which has challenged and shaped public perspectives
  • Since 1991, the magazine has helped over 92,000 vendors earn £115 million
  • Big Issue invest- social merchant bank 

  • Micro-enterprise for the vendors (offering a job for them)
  • Its a step into building someones life again
  • Helps the most needy in society to start their journey away from homelessness
  • You can subscribe/donate to the Big Issue to help them further
  • With the money they can Provide additional welfare help in the form of food vouchers, meter top-ups and other emergency aid
Messages and values:
  • It could be argued that the BI priviliges a white, male perspective owing to an under-representation of people of colour and women on covers where an individual is the focus
  • However, ethnic minorities and women are represented positively where they are featured- countertypes are used
  • The big issue challenges stereotypes in its representation of social groups in society e.g. featuring homeless people and The Big Issue vendors in a positive and often celebratory way
  • Editorial content is often critical of big businesses and banking
  • Champions the political cause, and role of an individual within society
  • Often focuses on personal and social issues in their representations of celebrities
  • Front covers tend to convey left wing political beliefs in their representations
  • Big Issues target mission is to dismantle poverty by creating opportunity, through self-help, social trading and business solutions
  • It has campaigned on issues such as:
    • anti-globalisation
    • high energy bills
    • making the government aware that its welfare system doesnt reduce poverty
    • campaigning for the living wage
