Curran and Seaton- mapping theory
- The idea that the media is controlled by a small number of companies which can inhabit creativity (driven by profit).
- JB is distributed by one of the big six: Disney- critics have suggested that there were racial/political messages in 1967 film diluted to make an entertaining animated film, exploiting synergy and targeting mass audiences.
-Mainstream films tend to lack of diversity with the primary objective being commercial, success and profit- both films offer escapist narratives without challenging stereotypes.
-Media ownership is the most important influence on media, with a small number of major conglomerates continuing to dominate the media industry despite the emergence of the internet.

Livingstone and Lunt- Regulation theory
-The idea that UK regulation policy e.g. the BBFC is driven by conflict to 'protect' from harm but also allow diversity/choice.
-Desensitisation and deregulation are core concepts- Disney knew their audience would accept the 2016 film would be darker, hence the PG
-Theatrical release wanted to target wide demographic to ensure good box office (curran and seaton)
-Disney carefully controlled the representations in JB16 to appeal to a wider demographic.

BBFC- British Board of Film Classification:
its a non-governmental organisation, founded by the film industry in 1912 and responsible for the national classification and censorship of films exhibited at cinemas and video works released on physical media within the UK.

1967:

  • U- suitable for all
  • politically, Jb depicted racial stereotypes at time of black civil rights
2016;
  • PG- mild threat
  • seen as darker
  • Disney is driven by profit -maximises audiences
  • Parental guidance- some scenes 'may' be unsuitable for young audiences.
