News- Colonialism

Colonialism- taking over different places
British History- colonised large parts of the world e.g. Australia, USA, Africa -which led to wars/revolutions

Gilroy- Postcolonial Theory:

  1. The political conflict which characterize multicultural societies is linked to our imperial and colonial history.
  2. Gilroy connects domestic conceptions of race, racism, immigrants and national identity to its imperial reach, affecting both new-comer and Native-born like.
  3. He argues that the near warship of WWII era, Britain obscures the reality of modern, multicultural Britain.

-London is the most multicultural city in the UK, which speaks many different and unique languages with mosques, churches etc. This helps bring people together and unite.

Teenage Boys in the news:

  • Figures show that more than half of the stories about teenage boys in national and regional newspapers in the past year (4,374 out of 8,629) were about crime.
  • The words most commonly used to describe them was "yobs" (591 times), "thugs" (254 times) and "sick (119 times).
  • The research - commissioned by Women in Journalism- showed that the best chance a teenager had of receiving positive coverage was when they died.
Headline; "A group of organised individuals have denotated a bomb in protest against their government"
(DAILY MAIL ) (THE GUARDIAN)

- " A group of sick youths planning a terrorist attack"
-" Freedom fighters battling against their government"

Here, we can see that the Daily Mail are much more biased and loud about the stories they cover, making it seem negative however the Guardian is much more relaxed and aren't onesided, appearing more trust-worthy.

"Floods of immigrants"
  • 'floods' highlights the thought that they are taking over the UK - language
  • The word 'migrants' tell us they don't belong here and give us the impression that they are going to take over our jobs/homes.- representation
  • It reinforces right-wing views (mainly white).-Audience
  • Captures the ideas/views of Daily Mail- more racist views on immigration etc.-Institution
  • Context: Brexit, lack of jobs, fear of immigration, money decrease.
  • Post colonialism theory: creates us and them divide in society which the UK expresses itself as criminalising immigrants.
