Disney question- industry

"Using the article, consider how Disney utilizes its assets to promote, distribute and exchange their films"

Disney is a global entertainment conglomerate which makes films for the mass entertainment market. Its one of five big media companies including paramount. They own numerous platforms including ABC, Marvel Studios, Lucasfilm, 20th century fox and Disney music group. Disney owns around 35% of the film market. Disney uses vertical integration- a process in which they have to produce, market, distribute and create merchandise for their products. For example, Disney produced High School Musical in their studios, marketed it on Disney Channel and ABC news by interviewing the cast. They have merchandise which includes apparel, bags and makeup.

Disney's reboot strategy, as suggested by Hesmondhalgh is very controversial. Some say it's uncreative and unoriginal and that Disney is profit-driven however, on the other hand, others think its a good idea because Disney is still going "incredibly strong" and that viewers enjoy the storyline of these films. Hesmondhalgh also suggests that social media separates people, not uniting them.

Disney has the benefit of cross-media assets, which can be used to promote their products. This is when they promote their products without the public knowing. Disney feature characters from films into their theme parks and resorts.they also have pre-movie adverts on DVD as well as in cinemas, which encourage and persuades the viewers to buy more of their products.

The Disney + platform has been in discussion among Disney's producers. Disney + could cause major streaming issues on platforms like Netflix as it features everything Disney owns from films down to ABC. Viewers can feedback on the platform as a form of exchange. It would cost $13 which is a dollar more than Netflix's standard price. This will definitely cause competition as Netflix features Disney TV shows and films on their platform. Although this price might not make a lot of profit to start with for Disney, it will attract millions of streamers across the world. The use of Disney + will allow Disney to promote their films in their own streaming platform which is assigned to their name, which might reduce money loss.

Disney has over 300+ Disney stores around the world, selling their own merchandise. All profits go back into the company, therefore it's just a circle. The Disney Store is an international chain of specialty stores selling only Disney related items, many of them exclusive, under its own name and Disney Outlet. This means the products are licensed and Disney is protected.

Disney has had to adapt to an 'end of audience' era which was created by Clay Shirky where in the "old media", main producers addressed atomised consumers however in the "new media", every consumer is now a producer. Its the idea that new producers have different motivations to the professionals. User-generated content creates an emotional connection between people who care about something. The 'audience' as a mass of people with predictable behaviour has vanished. Now, behaviour is variable across different sites with some audience creating content.
