Daily Mail vs The Guardian

The Daily Mail:
-Right wing conservative party
-targets middle England (white middle class)
-harsh and critical on gender and race issues.
-reflects concerns, hopes and lifestyles.

The guardian:
-Left wing labour party
-social, liberal and progressive
-Owned by Scott Trust
-aims to attract people who value change.
-campaigns against Brexit and pro immigration.

  • The Guardian and Daily Mail both hate teach other and will compete against each other. The guardian reported on a story from the daily mail and targeted them in a hatred way.
  • Virgin media banned daily mail from their trains- guardian liked this and reported on it.
  • Daily mail clapped back with an article on the guardian- guardian said it was fake news.
  • The guardian attacked the daily mail by drawing up a cartoon with a van which has "read the sun and the daily mail" on the side, which then attacked mosque worshipers.
  • Daily mail has a lot of nicknames e.g "Daily Fail" and "daily hail" (means Nazism)
  • Some say that if you don't read the guardian, you are below everyone else. This means readers of the guardian think they are right and fair with their opinions.

Jeremy Corbyn:
-Labour leader, left-wing politician.
-supporter of workers rights
-"for the many, not the few"
-protester
-unclear view on Brexit
-Supporter of Immigration

Theresa May:
-Ex-prime minister
-conservative
-created the hostile environment policy
-she presents herself as strong and stable
-wants to lead the country through Brexit.

How will Daily Mail and Guardian present a story about knife crime?
- The guardian will be sympathetic towards it but the daily mail will want to go to town with it. its one of their main stories and if it happened to someone who wasn't from the UK, they will make a big deal about it which gets peoples attention.

How do these stories differ?
  • The daily mail will try and portray a positive side to Boris Johnson because they are on the conservative side.
  • The Guardians title is:

"Raising hopes and denying gropes: Tory conference leaves no fantasy untouched "

  • This is opposing Johnson- mainly because they are left-wing labour. It will capture the audience and grab their attention. The letters and font stand out and catch your eye easily. The use of words used such as "denying gropes" has a negative view of Boris Johnson because they portray him as a bad person who lies. The Guardian doesn't have a fully positive view on conservatives and they lean more towards Labour, therefore they are going to oppose the other side, and portray them in a negative way, in the spotlight.
  • Underneath the title, includes a large, wide-angle picture of Boris Johnson and his team watching a speech. This shows the 'tory conference' included in the title, with Boris at the centre of attention, which overlooks the article.
  • The first line of the article is undoubtedly negative which highlights the horror of Brexit, which says that even though Johnson says Brexit is happening and it's going to get done, he is going to withdraw on schedule, portraying a negative view on Brexit which has been delayed for months and months. This tells the audience that the right-wing party is behind and slow, that keep delaying important things.
  • It includes inappropriate words that replace "get Brexit done" which is a dig at them to show that it probably won't work and will be bad for the country. As we can tell, it's clear that they do have strong, opposing views for the other right-wing parties, in order to inform the audience and readers that they are untrustworthy and they shouldn't follow their political views and opinions.
  • They portray the UK as being run by "a Jeremy kyle villian who knows the ancient greek for humbug" this shows that they think they know everything when, in reality, they dont.
The daily mail, however, have a totally different title and viewpoint:

“Brexit deal is revealed: EU envoy delivers five-point alternative to the backstop to Brussels”

  • Here, we can see that there is a totally different approach to the article. It mentions Brexit, not groping. This means that Boris Johnson is portrayed positively, mainly because they are on his side.
  • The headline is in a positive light, showing that the long waited Brexit deal is finally revealed. They block out the negative aspects of it by only focusing on the good aspects of Brexit and Boris Johnson. The daily mail are more of a right wing Conservative party which don't support immigration and believe that the social class don't deserve benefits.
  • Boris has apparently laid down a final plan which was sent to the commission president who wants a reasonable compromise. This shows that they are very focused on Brexit but not Boris Johnson's negative allegations like the Guardian.
  • They also included a big image of Johnson himself standing at the conservative table on stage, showing that they support him and the ideas about Brexit, even though it has been delayed for ages and many people in the UK disobey Brexit has a whole.
  • The Daily Mail are very one sided in the article as it doesn't balance out the positives and the negatives. This makes the Daily Mail seem untrustworthy and not reliable because they have one-sided views, in this case, like Johnson and don't support socialism.
  • There are senses of hyper reality in the article because it presents Johnson in a one lighted view when in reality, Brexit has gone wrong so many times that it is expected to go wrong from other parties including labour.
To conclude from these articles, we can clearly decide that The Daily Mail is much more supportive towards Boris Johnson because of their political stand and opinions. They are tory so will therefore be on his side and talk about the positives of Brexit. They dont include swear words or foul language in the article to emphasize this. On the other hand, The Guardian is much more offensive and negative towards him and the party because they are labour and support more socialist views, rather than capitalism. We can argue that Brexit is leant more to the money side that we are only doing Brexit to strengthen the enconomy and forgetting about the lower working class people which will cause tension throughout the article and the Guardians opinions.
