The 'Press' questions

Q: Watch at least one episode of "Press" and answer the following questions:

  • What do you learn about the financial pressures facing newspapers today and how that might shape decisions about the stories covered?
  • What do you learn about the legal and ethical regulations newspapers follow?
  • What do you learn about how the ownership of newspapers can affect the stories covered?
  • What do you learn about the role the internet plays in the life of the paper?
  • What do you learn about the different news values of the red-top tabloid paper (The post- similar to the sun) and the broadsheet paper (similar to the guardian)
Newspapers sometimes come across financial problems and it affects how decisions around what stories are conveyed. In press, it shows that when sales are down that they face pressures of having to sometimes play it safe with the stories they cover, which could lead to other undeveloped stories to be discarded of. These undeveloped stories could've sold the newspaper more than without them.

Although newspapers create stories that to the audience might seem like they're breaking some regulations but they're not. They do have barriers when it comes to the ethical and legal regulations they have to follow.

Newspapers under different ownerships have varied opinions of the same story as newspapers tend to have different political views and therefore different opinions on stories. Some newspapers also tend to sell based on gossip and catchy headlines so they may end up emphasising certain stories that they know will more than likely sell them than if they didn't emphasise that much.

The internet plays a huge part in the life of newspapers as the journalists can get easy access to nearly any information on it that will bring a story together. Newspapers that are in competition with each other will try and compete to get a story o will maybe even end up getting the same information from the internet.

Both of the newspapers companies that are featured in the Press both have opposing political views and will, therefore, have different values. The Post, which is a tableoid seems to not care that much about typical views and caring about how their stories will make people feel. Whereas The broadsheet seems to contain more traditional values and want to get the real story of what happened and not make people feel humiliated.
